Below is an excerpt of response received from the Bucyrus City School District Board President Randall Blankenship (rblankenship@bucyrusschools.org) - which is demonstrative of the short-sighted, self-serving, inconsiderate approach this school district seems to take with serious matters.
"Regarding the Shifely Award, I had not heard of it until your email. I have since learned that it was created last year at the suggestion of the Bucyrus Music Boosters by the music teachers. The music teachers evaluate the applications and determine which student receives the award. Neither the Board nor the administration have anything to do with creating or awarding the award to students, and will not direct that the music teachers cease presentation of that award to students. Frankly, I fail to see how an award named after a teacher who served the District for 39 years constitutes a “risk to students” as you contend below.
