PETITION TO REOPEN THE HENRY H. BRIGHAM SWIM CENTER
The Issue
To Mayor Garnett Johnson, District 5 Commissioner Don Clark, the Augusta-Richmond County Commission, and the Augusta Recreation and Parks Department:
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of the Augusta community, respectfully but firmly request immediate action to complete the necessary repairs and reopen the Henry H. Brigham Swim Center.
According to Augusta Recreation and Parks, the pool has been closed since October 31, 2025, because of mechanical problems involving the boiler and sand-filtration system. The city subsequently reported that additional work was needed on the dehumidifier and boiler enclosure.
Despite the announced repair activity, the pool remains closed, and the public has not been given a firm completion date. Residents, particularly senior citizens and individuals who depend on aquatic exercise for rehabilitation, mobility, pain management, and general health, have been required to travel to the Augusta Aquatic Center. This creates an unnecessary burden and prevents some residents from participating at all.
The Henry H. Brigham Swim Center is an essential community health and wellness resource. An indefinite closure without a publicly available repair schedule and reopening date is unacceptable.
We call upon Augusta officials to:
Provide a written report identifying every outstanding repair.
Disclose the repair budget, funding source, contractor or vendor, and status of all ordered parts.
Publish a firm schedule for beginning and completing the remaining work.
Provide regular public progress reports until the repairs are completed.
Establish and announce a definite target date for reopening the pool.
Make reopening the Henry H. Brigham Swim Center an immediate community priority.
We ask Commissioner Don Clark, as the District 5 representative, to sponsor or place this matter on the Augusta Commission agenda and advocate for any funding or administrative action required to complete the project.
The residents of this community deserve transparency, accountability, and timely restoration of this important public facility.
