Petition to Rename either Brookside Shelter or Delta landing in Honor of Michael Fischer
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully propose renaming the Brookside Shelter in Richmond, CA, to the "Michael Fischer center" in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Contra Costa County. Michael's dedication to improving the lives of the homeless and those battling addiction and recovery has left a lasting impact on our community.
Michael Fischer was not just a dedicated health services administrator; he was also my beloved brother. His commitment to helping others was evident in every aspect of his life, and his work has transformed countless lives in our community.
Michael Fischer served as a health services administrator for Contra Costa County for 14 years. His work included:
Health Services Administrator: Michael worked for 14 years as a health services administrator for Contra Costa County, passionately advocating for the homeless and individuals battling addiction and recovery.
Project Roomkey: He played a significant role in this initiative, which provided safe accommodations for the homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic by utilizing hotels.
Brookside Shelter: Michael announced the opening of the remodeled Brookside Shelter, enhancing its facilities to better serve homeless individuals by providing emergency food, job training, healthcare, mental health counseling, and substance abuse treatment.
East County Intern Housing Program: He was involved in the renovation of the former Motel 6 into the East County Intern Housing Program, providing essential housing support and improving living conditions.
Contra Costa HMIS Policy Committee: As a member of this committee, Michael contributed to discussions and initiatives aimed at improving housing and support services for the homeless.
Community Engagement: Michael was actively involved in various charitable endeavors, including his church, the Iron Shop Men's Group, the Kairos Prison Ministry, and mission trips to Guatemala and El Salvador.
Renaming the Brookside Shelter to the "Michael Fischer center" would honor Michael's legacy and recognize his tireless efforts to support the homeless and vulnerable populations in our community. This gesture would serve as a lasting tribute to his dedication and inspire others to continue his mission of compassion and service.
We urge the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors to consider this proposal and take the necessary steps to honor Michael Fischer's memory by renaming the Brookside Shelter.
We, the undersigned, support this proposal to rename the Brookside Shelter in honor of Michael Fischer and recognize his invaluable contributions to our community.
