Petition to remove SMH Peru-Spring Valley Admins

The Issue

As our community is aware - St Margaret’s Hospital Peru location was abruptly closed.

Employees were given seven days notice prior to the closing and questions went unanswered. No assistance was provided to help guide employees in regards to important questions about the result of this closure.

Illinois legislators have called SMH administrators negligent, their behaviors illegal. Legislators have recognized this process was manipulated and administration were dishonest and overall failed greatly.

The loss of this hospital has not only unemployed many in a very unethical way with no time to plan. This closure of the emergency room, hospital and closure of OB services puts lives at risk. People will die as a result of this closure. Of the many at risk groups - women and babies are one of the most at risk groups - as there is no OB care within a close proximity barring one facility that is often already overwhelmed by current patient load. Most women in this community will have to travel at minimum an hour for prenatal care, delivery etc. This creates obstacles for all women but specifically low income women who may not have the resources or transportation to receive the care they need. This is inhumane. All social classes deserve access to healthcare. Rural communities already suffer from accessibility - specifically women. Research shows women with access to OB care in rural areas are less likely to have pre term delivery, neonatal death and maternal death. This is a grave reality of obstacles women will now face in this rural community. This closure put profits over patients in an already fragile healthcare system where care even prior to this closure is often hard to obtain.

Minutes can mean a matter of life or death. The community in the areas that utilize this hospital was never considered. Many cardiac events, neurological events and so many other life threatening events will not get the immediate attention they need for people to survive them.

”Dangerous” is an understatement in regards to this closure.

These administrators have to be held accountable. Since the transition of IVCH to SMH there has been little to no communication, a poor relationship with employees and the community, and massive failures to maintain accessible care in our community.

We deserve access to care from an organization that cares for us.

What is the goal of this petition?

  • sign the petition urging SMH corporate to terminate the current administration overseeing SMH Peru
  • call SMP Corporate Office (who has also been absent during this devastating community crisis) - demand their presence and the administration to be held accountable - call with details about what has happened to you personally in this crisis whether as an employee or member of the community. Voice your concern and community support. And voice the need for administrators overseeing Peru to be held accountable for their immoral, unethical and ILLEGAL behavior. Hospital administrators who behave this way do not have a place in healthcare. Demand they are removed.
  • call our state legislators and echo the already prominent voices that we absolutely need access to care in our community. Specifically - emergency care and OB care. Emphasize the importance. Share your experience and concerns about this loss of care, again whether as an employee or a member of the community. Call on them to not lose traction on this.
  • call IDPH and share your experience and concerns in regards to the negligence of SMH Peru administration. Either as an employee or a community member. Demand they are held accountable.
