To the Organizers of the Deichbrand Festival,

We, the undersigned, express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the inclusion of Macklemore in the lineup for the Deichbrand Festival, scheduled from July 17 to 20, 2025. Given Macklemore’s history of actions perceived as antisemitic, we find his participation in a German festival to be profoundly insensitive and disrespectful to the victims of antisemitism.

Instances of Concern:

2014 Costume Incident: During a performance in Seattle, Macklemore donned a disguise that included a fake beard, wig, and a large prosthetic nose, resembling offensive Jewish caricatures. This act was widely criticized as perpetuating harmful stereotypes.  
2024 “Hind’s Hall” Song: Macklemore released a song titled “Hind’s Hall,” which has been labeled as antisemitic by various organizations. The song’s content and its timing, coinciding with significant Jewish commemorations, were seen as particularly offensive.  

Germany has a profound historical responsibility to combat antisemitism in all its forms. Hosting an artist with such a controversial record sends the wrong message and undermines efforts to promote inclusivity and respect.

Our Request:

We urge the Deichbrand Festival organizers to reconsider Macklemore’s participation in the 2025 event. By removing him from the lineup, the festival would demonstrate its commitment to upholding values of tolerance and sensitivity towards all communities.
