Old Dominion University has made the offensive decision to have Virginia governor, Glenn Youngkin be an honorary speaker for the May 2023 Commencement Ceremony. Please sign and share to prevent Glenn Youngkin from speaking!!! 

As an ODU alumna, I am appalled at Old Dominion’s decision to make Youngkin the honorary speaker. Youngkin’s stance on transgender rights, the black community and women’s rights go completely against what ODU “claims” they stand for. It is a travesty that ODU will allow Youngkin to speak on behalf of these graduates when he has done nothing but harm to their communities. 

It is an absolute disgrace that ODU’s president, Brian O. Hemphill, would allow such a disgusting man to speak at this commencement ceremony.  President Hemphill notes his support of Youngkin by stating, “We are equally excited to be joined by [the graduates’] family members and loved ones for this milestone, as well as Gov. Youngkin who will provide an inspiring message, which will be driven by his passion for service and success in business.”

How could a man who has gone against constitutional rights of Virginians give an “inspiring” message to these graduates? Why are we prioritizing “success in business”  rather than the safety and overall health for students at ODU? Is this truly the message ODU wants to leave for graduates and students alike?
