Before the Epstein scandal, there was the Franklin scandal.

In 1988, six victims in Omaha, Nebraska, accused powerful and affluent men of abusing them and others when they were minors. Nebraska state and federal grand juries declared their accusations a "hoax." Two decades later, a Florida grand jury declared that Jeffrey Epstein had not abused a single minor.

The victims in Nebraska were pressured to recant their accusations, but a 20-year-old woman, Alisha Owen, refused. Facing 200 years in prison for perjury, she still refused to recant. When she was 22 years old, a kangaroo court sentenced her to between 9 and 15 years for perjury. She spent nearly two years in solitary confinement.
