Petition to Reject Proposed Housing Development South of Sawtry

Petition to Reject Proposed Housing Development South of Sawtry
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of the Sawtry community, strongly object to the proposed development of approximately 330 new homes on land south of Sawtry and call on the local council and our Member of Parliament to reject this proposal.
Sawtry has already experienced significant growth in recent years, yet vital infrastructure has not kept pace with the increasing population. Our village is currently facing:
Overstretched GP and healthcare services
Increasing traffic and congestion on roads that are not designed to support further major growth local shops and services under strain nurseries and junior schools already at or near full capacity, with some local families unable to secure places for their own children within the village.
Approving hundreds of additional homes without first delivering substantial, guaranteed infrastructure improvements will place unacceptable pressure on families and existing residents.
Furthermore, this development would permanently destroy surrounding green fields and countryside, changing the character of Sawtry and removing valuable natural space that cannot be replaced. Once this land is built on, it is lost forever.
While the proposal refers to “affordable housing,” many working residents are already struggling with the cost of living, rent, and mortgages. There is serious concern that these homes will not be genuinely affordable for local people, nor will they adequately address the needs of those already on housing waiting lists in the area.
We are not opposed to sensible development, but we strongly oppose large-scale housing projects that proceed without:
Proven and funded infrastructure plans adequate school and nursery capacity road improvements to manage increased traffic meaningful consultation with and consideration of local residents
We therefore urge the council and relevant planning authorities to reject this proposal and to prioritise sustainable development that genuinely supports both current and future residents of Sawtry.
