Petition to Reinstate Security Guard at Gordon House

Il problema

SUBJECT MATTER:  Until last year, Gordon House had a long-standing and dedicated security guard, Hussein, who had spent years ensuring the safety of the department and facilitating accessibility for students. However, as part of a cost-cutting decision, he was redeployed into a campus security role. This change was implemented without consulting the Greek and Latin Department, leading to several significant issues for both staff and students:

  • Security Concerns: Gordon House is situated on a busy road, making it vulnerable to unauthorised entry. While an intercom system is in place, it does little to prevent individuals from following students or staff into the building, particularly during peak hours when the street is crowded;
  • Lack of Front Desk Presence: On days when the administrative team is working remotely, there is no front-of-office staff to welcome visitors or address immediate queries, which impacts the efficiency of the facility;
  • Access Difficulties: Many individuals frequently forget their ID cards, and while the intercom allows security to be contacted, it is far less efficient than having an on-site security presence. Students and staff are often left waiting outside in the cold, adding unnecessary inconvenience;
  • Limited Accessibility: For those with mobility challenges, the absence of an on-site security guard has created significant obstacles. Previously, Hussein assisted with door access, ensuring that all members of the department could move freely and comfortably within the building. It is unfair that these accessibility barriers persist, especially when UCL advocates for equality and inclusivity; the university must uphold its commitment by ensuring that all students and staff have equal access to their learning and working environment.

The removal of Hussein has compromised both safety and accessibility at Gordon House. We urge UCL to reconsider this decision and reinstate a security guard at the entrance in order to safeguard the well-being of all staff and students.
