Petition to Reduce VTA Train Noise in Whisman Station Corridor

Petition to Reduce VTA Train Noise in Whisman Station Corridor
The Issue
Dear City Council Members,
We, the undersigned residents and concerned individuals of the Whisman Station corridor, are writing to express our growing concern regarding the historical, ongoing and increasing levels of noise generated by the VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) trains in our community. The light rail noise has been a historical problem and became even worse in June of 2022. The disruptive noise from these trains has significantly impacted our quality of life, causing disturbances during day and night, and affecting our well-being, peace, and tranquility. It is now time for this to be addressed.
The incessant noise pollution caused by the VTA trains has become a matter of great distress for the residents, disrupting sleep patterns, hindering our ability to concentrate, and impacting our mental and physical health. As members of this community, we believe that it is essential for our voices to be heard and for action to be taken to address this issue promptly.
We strongly urge the Mountain View City Council and relevant authorities to take immediate measures to mitigate the noise generated by the trains passing through our neighborhood. We propose the following solutions:
1. Require a quiet zone to be immediately established between Central Expressway and Bayshore/ NASA Station with strict limits on noise.
2. The elimination of horns used while entering and exiting train stations and at crossings.
3. The elimination or significant reduction in crossing bell noise levels.
4. Installation of noise barriers or soundproofing measures along the train tracks to minimize the propagation of noise into our residential areas.
5. Regular maintenance and upgrade of train components that contribute to excessive noise emissions.
6. Implementation of quieter train technologies or methods to reduce noise pollution.
7. Establish and empower a neighborhood committee to review and approve any planned VTA changes that could increase noise levels prior to implementation.
The neighborhood has tried numerous actions to encourage the Mountain View City Council and VTA to take action with no results. Therefore, we respectfully request a meeting with the Mountain View City Council, VTA representatives, local government officials, and community leaders to discuss viable solutions to alleviate the train noise affecting our neighborhood.
We, the undersigned, urge swift and concrete action to reduce/eliminate the noise generated by VTA trains in our neighborhood and gain the peace and quiet essential for our community's well-being.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your prompt response and meaningful actions to resolve this pressing concern.
Sincerely,
