Petition to Reduce Traffic Congestion Through “Corner-Cut Roads” at Major Junctions
The Issue
GIVE BENGALURU A PRACTICAL TRAFFIC SOLUTION TODAY
Every day, thousands of people in Bengaluru lose hours sitting in traffic.
We wait for flyovers, tunnels, bridges and other major infrastructure projects. These projects are important, but they can take years to plan and complete.
But what about the people suffering from traffic today?
People are reaching home after dinner.
Parents are missing time with their children.
Families are going to sleep before their loved ones reach home.
And the next morning, the same traffic starts again.
We need to explore smaller and faster solutions alongside major projects.
OUR PROPOSAL: “CORNER-CUT ROADS”
At many major traffic signals, four roads meet:
NORTH | EAST | SOUTH | WEST
Imagine a vehicle travelling from North to West.
Instead of requiring every vehicle to enter the main signal junction and wait for the appropriate signal phase, could a small additional road be created around the corner of the junction, wherever technically feasible?
Some junction corners may require only a relatively small parcel of land.
Where suitable, the Government could study whether land of approximately 1–4 guntas, depending on the individual junction, could be acquired through the proper legal process and converted into a small additional road connection.
The idea is simple:
Small corner land → additional road movement → less pressure on the main junction → potentially less waiting
This could be studied for suitable movements such as:
North → West
North → East
South → West
South → East
East → North
East → South
West → North
West → South
The exact design should be decided by qualified traffic engineers after studying each junction.
WE ARE NOT ASKING TO REPLACE FLYOVERS OR TUNNELS
We need major infrastructure for Bengaluru's future.
But we also need practical solutions for Bengaluru today.
If a small road improvement at one junction can save even a portion of the waiting time, and similar improvements are made at many suitable junctions, the combined benefit could be meaningful.
Even a potential 15–20% improvement at selected locations deserves to be studied scientifically rather than dismissed without testing.
PROPER ROAD MARKINGS ARE ALSO IMPORTANT
Along with these improvements, Bengaluru needs clear and durable:
Lane markings
Direction arrows
Turning lanes
Entry and exit markings
Reflective road markings
Directional signboards
Pedestrian crossings
Clear lane guidance can help vehicles maintain their lanes and reduce unnecessary confusion and lane changes.
OUR REQUEST
We are asking the Government of Karnataka, BBMP and Bengaluru traffic authorities to:
1. Identify heavily congested junctions.
2. Study whether Corner-Cut Roads are technically feasible.
3. Identify suitable small land parcels around junction corners.
4. Evaluate the legal and financial feasibility of acquiring such land.
5. Select a few junctions for a pilot project.
6. Measure traffic before and after implementation.
7. If the results are positive, consider expanding the solution to other suitable junctions.
LET US TEST THE IDEA.
We are not claiming that Corner-Cut Roads will solve all of Bengaluru's traffic problems.
We are asking the authorities to study, test and measure the idea.
Bengaluru needs solutions for the future.
But Bengaluru's citizens also need relief today.
