Petition to reconsider the Proposed Cycle Spine through The Oval and King Edward's Avenue.
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of The Oval and King Edward's Avenue,
call on Gloucestershire County Council and our local MP Alex McIntyre to reconsider the
proposed Cycle Spine scheme.
While we support investment in cycling and sustainable transport, we are concerned that the
current proposals would have a significant negative impact on the safety, accessibility and
wellbeing of our community and urge the council to reconsider the proposal.
Our Concerns
● Reduced access for emergency vehicles, potentially affecting response times for
residents.
● Increased risk to children using the local Oval park, where gates open onto the route
close to a blind corner.
● Loss of on-street parking used by residents, visitors and families attending sporting
activities at the Lannet Park
● Removal of a roundabout installed to address a junction with a history of serious traffic
accidents.
● Prohibition of the right turn into King Edward's Avenue, forcing traffic onto nearby
residential streets that are already narrow, heavily parked and congested.
● Increased traffic, noise and safety concerns in neighbouring roads as a result of traffic
displacement.
We Call on Gloucestershire County Council To:
1. Pause the current proposals.
2. Review the impact on safety, emergency access, parking and traffic flow.
3. Consult meaningfully with affected residents.
4. Consider alternative routes or designs that achieve cycling objectives with less impact on
local communities.
Closing Statement
We support improved cycling infrastructure, but it must not come at the expense of road safety,
emergency access, child safety and the quality of life of local residents.
We urge Gloucestershire County Council and our local MP to reconsider the current
proposals and work with residents to find a safer and more appropriate solution.
