The Issue

We, the undersigned students, are asking that the new daily rotating duty system be reconsidered. We understand the goal is to ensure duties are completed when students are absent, but we believe there are ways to address that without changing everyone’s duty every day.

1. Keep the 7 week system with a plan for absences.
A master duty list could be posted so we can easily identify and cover the duties of anyone who is absent. Students graduating during that 7 week period could serve as duty floaters rather than taking a duty they will leave before the rotation ends.

2. Consistency makes duties easier to learn and complete correctly.
Having the same duty for 7 weeks allows us to learn exactly what is expected and develop a routine. Switching every day can be confusing and makes it harder to adjust to everything required for each duty. If 7 weeks is no longer an option, changing duties weekly, such as every Tuesday, could be a reasonable middle ground.

3. Daily assignments add more responsibility to an already busy front desk.
The front desk can already become overwhelming at busy times, especially at the end of the day. Having every student check in for a new duty card each day and return for signatures creates additional traffic and responsibility that could make things more chaotic for both students and the front desk.

4. Keep towels with the incoming floor class.
Towels have traditionally been a rite of passage for the newest class during their first 7 weeks. We are absolutely willing to help when needed, but we believe towels should remain primarily their responsibility.

Our goal is not to avoid duties. We are asking for a consistent system with clear expectations that still ensures everything gets done.
