PETITION FOR PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK

TO: Mayor and Council of Prince George

We, the undersigned residents, parents, and concerned community members, respectfully request that the City of Prince George conduct a pedestrian safety assessment and install a pedestrian push-button crosswalk at the intersection of 9th and Vancouver Street.

This intersection is regularly used by children, families, seniors, and other pedestrians. Residents have reported numerous unsafe interactions between pedestrians and vehicles. High traffic volumes, vehicle speeds, and the intersection's location on a hill create significant safety concerns, particularly for children travelling through the area. The recently constructed ambulance station nearby adds to these concerns, as emergency vehicles may travel through the area at increased speeds while responding to calls, further increasing the risk of serious incidents.

We believe a push-button crosswalk, and any additional safety measures deemed appropriate by City staff, would improve visibility, increase driver awareness, and provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians.

We respectfully ask that the City:

1.      Conduct a traffic and pedestrian count at the intersection.

2.      Review collision and incident data for the area.

3.      Assess whether a marked crosswalk, flashing pedestrian beacons, enhanced signage, or other traffic-calming measures are warranted.

4.      Prioritize improvements to protect children and other vulnerable pedestrians.

The safety of our community’s children should be a priority, and we ask the Council to take action before a serious injury occurs.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned Residents, Parents and Community Members.
