The Issue

During summer construction the sidewalk used for drop off and pick up has been significantly narrowed. The Village of Wilmette  will not widen the sidewalk because of concerns for the health of the trees located along the median.

They propose instead either to widen the sidewalk at small intervals between the trees,  but have students continue to use the narrow sidewalk for long stretches next to each tree or to make a crossover between trees and have students then walk on the narrow sidewalk next to the buses. Both proposals don’t address the problem and force the students to navigate a cramped space in close proximity to moving vehicular traffic. These conditions will only worsen during winter months.

By signing this petition we are asking the Village of Wilmette to prioritize student safety over the trees and to remove the trees so a safe walking route can be restored for the children to attend school.  We ask for urgent attention to this matter before a students safety is jeopardized.
