Petition to Prohibit Left 🚗Turns on Flashing Yellow 🚦

We, the undersigned residents and community members, respectfully urge local and state transportation authorities in Arizona to prohibit left turns on flashing yellow arrows at high-risk intersections.
This petition is driven by a devastating and preventable tragedy—the loss of a teenage life in a recent accident caused during a left turn under a flashing yellow signal.
What is intended as a “yield” condition often creates confusion, misjudgment, and dangerous gaps in traffic, especially at busy and rapidly growing intersections.
Flashing yellow arrows allow drivers to turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic. However, in high-volume intersections, this split-second decision can lead to catastrophic consequences. Drivers frequently misjudge speed or distance, and visibility can be compromised due to traffic congestion, larger vehicles, or poor road design.
Our community has grown significantly, bringing increased traffic and risk. Intersections that once functioned safely under older traffic volumes are now hazardous under current conditions. The loss of a young life is a painful reminder that immediate action is needed.
We are calling for the following actions:
Prohibit left turns on flashing yellow arrows at identified high-risk intersections
Replace them with protected left-turn signals (green arrow only)- Conduct safety reviews of intersections with a history of severe accidents
Increase public awareness about the dangers of left-turn yield situations.
This is not just about one intersection—it is about preventing future tragedies and protecting all drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians in our community.
No family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one due to a preventable traffic design risk. We ask our local leaders to act decisively and prioritize safety over convenience.
Together, we can make our roads safer.
