The Issue

To: North Carolina General Assembly, Senate Rules and Operations Committee, and Governor of North Carolina

We, the undersigned, urge the North Carolina General Assembly to pass Senate Bill 162, ensuring that children in custody cases have the opportunity to maintain meaningful relationships with both parents.

Why This Matters:

• Children Thrive with Both Parents – Research shows that children benefit emotionally, mentally, and academically when both parents share equal parenting time.

• Fairness in Custody Decisions – The current system often results in one parent receiving significantly more time than the other. SB 162 establishes a presumption of joint custody, ensuring a fair starting point in custody cases.

• Strengthens Families and Reduces Conflict – A clear presumption of shared parenting reduces litigation, lowers legal costs, and promotes cooperation between parents.

What We Ask:

We call on the Senate Rules and Operations Committee to schedule a hearing and advance SB 162. We urge the North Carolina General Assembly to pass this bill into law, giving children the opportunity to maintain strong relationships with both parents.

By signing this petition, we express our strong support for SB 162 and demand action from our elected representatives.
