Petition to Oppose the New Rule Change in the PBCWTA Women’s Tennis League

The Issue

We, the undersigned members of the PBCWTA League, respectfully voice our opposition to the recent rule change mandating a 10-point tiebreaker in place of the third set during league matches. We believe this modification does not align with the best interests of the players and undermines the spirit and integrity of our sport.

Tennis is a game that tests physical endurance, mental fortitude, and strategic prowess. The traditional third set is a pivotal element of our matches, allowing players to fully display these qualities and resolve matches fairly and comprehensively. Replacing the third set with a short tiebreaker diminishes the depth and competitiveness of the game, leading to results that may not accurately reflect the players’ abilities or efforts.
The new rule fails to take into account the preferences of the players who make up this league. It shortens the duration of matches, depriving us of the opportunity to engage in the full challenge that tennis has to offer. Moreover, it alters the dynamics of the game, placing undue emphasis on a single tiebreaker rather than the sustained skill and determination traditionally required to win a match.

We urge the PBCWTA Board of Directors to reconsider this rule change and restore the option of a third set in league matches. We believe that maintaining the traditional format is essential to preserving the integrity and enjoyment of the game for all participants.

By signing this petition, we affirm our commitment to upholding the values of competitive tennis and call upon the league to respect the voices of its players.
