Petition to Oppose House Bill 2819

Petition to Oppose House Bill 2819
The Issue
Oppose HB2819 to keep this public land for all the People of Hawaii.
With the passing of SB 2783 land settlement that transferred 25 acres of prime real estate into the custody of OHA the movement continues to seek an exemption from current laws prohibiting residential development in Kaka’ako Makai. HB2819 will allow OHA an exemption to current State law, which prohibits residential development in Kaka'ako Makai, and it will allow them the opportunity to develop residential property on 2 lots in Kaka'ako Makai. The 2 public lots are the lot just Ewa of Fisherman's Wharf and the Forrest Avenue Lot across from the old CompUSA. This action will also set a bad precedent for further residential development by giving other entities the opportunity to also ask for exceptions in the Kaka'ako Makai area and will further restrict access to the ocean and shoreline. Once you build residential, the land becomes private and only the residents can use the land.
I signed a petition for SB 682. Why are you asking me to sign another petition?
SB 682 stalled in the House. To keep SB 682’s exemption for residential in Kaka’ako Makai alive, Senate Committees added similar wording into an existing bill. That bill is HB 2819.
What’s next?
The next stop for the Bill is the Conference Committee. The Conference Committee could vote and accept the amended bill as-is and the bill would move to the House and Senate for a floor vote. Only members who are present during the floor votes are counted. If it passes, it then goes forward for the Governor's signature. No hearings/testimonies have to be made or taken while it is in the Conference committee.
Bottom line is this measure with amendments could pass into law without the voice of the people being heard.
Every time someone signs the petition an email showing that you oppose the measure is generated and sent to the people we are petitioning.
