We, the undersigned residents of New York’s 4th Congressional District and members of the broader community, strongly urge you to pass a law to mandate marijuana education in NYS Public High Schools.
Since the legalization of both recreational and medicinal marijuana in New York, marijuana has become significantly more accessible in our community. While legalization offers medical benefits for some, it also brings increased risk – especially to youth – due to greater availability, normalization, and lack of understanding about the potential health, social, and legal consequences of use. The lack of comprehensive education has led to misinformation and uninformed decision-making, especially among teenagers and families.
We, therefore, petition you to:
Require marijuana education into health and wellness curriculum in high schools.
Fund public awareness campaigns that highlight the risks of marijuana use, especially for adolescents.
Host community workshops for families to learn about marijuana laws, health effects, and give informational conversations with teenagers about marijuana.
Partner with local healthcare providers to create science-based educational materials for schools and public centers.
Encourage responsible use and informed decision-making through outreach in community spaces such as libraries, afterschool programs, and recreation centers.
This petition was initiated by Katie Giannaris at John F. Kennedy High School, Bellmore/Merrick, with support from concerned community members committed to ensuring the safety and health of our community members.
