Petition to let students dress up for Halloween in Veterans Park Academy for the Arts
The Issue
Many students are excited this year for Halloween. For the past two years, Halloween and other holidays has been almost completely cancelled because of global issues such as COVID-19, so it makes sense for them to be so excited this year. Despite this, our school refuses to let students dress up for this fun holiday. Not only that, many of the younger students won't get to experience Halloween.
Last year, several students across the school had been complaining about not being able to celebrate Halloween. One student reports, "I believe our school should celebrate Halloween because it would be nice to take a break and connect with our teachers and students."
Even though it could be distracting, we can implement rules on what you can wear for your costume. An example of this would be no full face masks, no outfits that show too much skin, and no inflatable costumes. One teacher pitched in, "At the old school I used to work at, we had a themed spirit week to combat people wearing inappropriate outfits for their Halloween costumes. One day they would dress up as heroes, then the next day as college students."
If we allow students to dress up this year, I believe it will help students connect with each other and their teachers. As a student myself, I think it would make me much more excited to come to school if I could get to see my peers and teachers having fun on Halloween as well.
School staff if you're reading this, please let us celebrate Halloween this year.
Thank you to Katelyn Mccormack for helping with the writing.
