The Issue

We, the students, families, alumni, athletes, staff, and supporters of Plainfield East High School, respectfully ask District 202 to reconsider the decision to remove Mr. Billy Murphy from the Humanities Department due to district-wide budget cuts.

Mr. Murphy is far more than a Humanities teacher. He is a mentor, coach, leader, and an important part of the Bengal family. Every day, he brings energy and positivity to Plainfield East through engaging morning announcements, meaningful relationships with students, and his dedication both inside and outside of the classroom.

Murphy has built strong connections with students and families throughout the years. He taught my brother, who is now in college, and now teaches me. His impact reaches far beyond academics. Even students who have never had him as a teacher recognize the support, encouragement, and school spirit he brings to Plainfield East.

No matter the wins or losses, Murphy always represents what it truly means to be a Bengal. He supports students academically, emotionally, and personally while helping create a welcoming and united school environment.

While we understand the financial challenges facing District 202, removing Mr. Murphy from the Humanities Department is not the right solution. Teachers who make lasting impacts on students and strengthen school culture should be valued and supported. Mr. Murphy’s dedication, leadership, and relationships within the Plainfield East community cannot simply be replaced.

We strongly urge District 202 to reconsider this decision and keep Mr. Billy Murphy in the Humanities Department at Plainfield East High School.

Sincerely,

The Students, Families, Alumni, Athletes, and Supporters of Plainfield East High School
