Keep Universities Open!

Keep Universities Open!
The Issue
The University and College Union (UCU) has called for universities to remain closed to students this coming term. We believe this is a disproportionate measure, and that students should be able to attend university, providing social distancing measures are in place.
What has the UCU said?
The UCU is scaremongering, suggesting that universities could become 'the care homes of a second wave'. This is irresponsible and epidemiologically inaccurate: students of university age are at extremely low-risk from this virus.
The UCU proposal shows little concern for the mental health of young people, who have already been asked to sacrifice an enormous amount over the past 6 months. The university experience is far more than just learning, it is about meeting new people and having new life experiences. This UCU proposal would deny students of that altogether. Consider the misery and sadness that such a policy would cause.
Consider also the economic devastation that such closures would have. Many university towns depend on the returning cohort of students each year to flood their businesses with money. Compulsory remote learning would prevent this, and dig this country deeper into a recession.
What do we want?
We want universities to remain open to all the staff and students who wish to attend in person, whilst provisions should be made to allow those who wish to continue shielding to work from home. With social distancing, masks and good hygiene, we believe that universities can reopen safely.
