The Issue

The Dueling Pianos show at Parq Vancouver has been a source of joy and entertainment for locals and tourists alike for the past 5 years. Known for dynamic and interactive performances, the act has become a staple of Vancouver’s nightlife, creating countless memorable evenings through the magic of live music and audience participation. Taking requests from the audience has kept performances fresh for its devoted fans and for many others who enjoy coming to the safe and friendly environment after a major event in downtown Vancouver.

Recently, however, Parq Vancouver’s management decided to cancel the Dueling Pianos show. This news has shocked the community that has fervently supported and cherished these performances. The interactive nature of the show has built a loyal fan base and fostered a warm social environment in a city where the Vancouver Foundation and SFU Public Square have identified social isolation as a public concern.

The cancellation, besides removing a vibrant and beloved element from the Parq cultural scene, also affects these artists’ livelihoods. The talented musicians, who pour their heart and soul into each performance, are now facing an uncertain future.

Studies show that live music is essential to urban cultural life, directly contributing to the mental well-being of communities and the vibrancy of local economies. A report from the Music Canada Association concluded that live performances generate significant economic activity and create meaningful employment opportunities in Canadian cities.

Reversing the cancellation would underscore a commitment to supporting the arts and local talent. Furthermore, it would display an acknowledgement of the importance of customer and community feedback and of the intrinsic value culture plays in people’s lives.

We, the undersigned, ask Parq Vancouver’s management to reconsider their decision to cancel the Dueling Pianos and recommit to presenting these talented and beloved musicians on a weekly basis.
