Petition to honor longest serving President of WCC with "Hankin Way"

The Issue

One of Dr. Joseph Hankin’s many contributions to Westchester Community College was the establishment of an entrance to its Valhalla campus on Knollwood Road. Prior to his arrival at WCC, there was none, and traffic was often congested at the existing portals.

Back in 1971, when I was first hired, as well as Dr. Hankin, the only campus entrances were on Grasslands Road, and there were three of them.  In addition to the two existing East and West Gates, now serving as primary entrances to the Valhalla Campus, there was a third, “Main Gate” and roadway, in the center of the stone fence that still borders the property on Grasslands Road.  It was located directly across from the entrance to Kensico Cemetery and had been the original Hartford Family entrance to their estate. The steel gate, once there, is now gone, and a gap in the stone fence, overgrown with vegetation and overlooked by passersby, is all that remains of it.

It was Dr. Hankin, who proudly announced, at the beginning of his tenure in the early 1970’s, that we would have a new entrance to the campus on Knollwood Road, with a new road running from that point to the main campus.  It was an important innovation that facilitated the flow of traffic.

Every time I drive that way, I remember Dr. Hankin’s announcement of the “new road” and feel a debt of gratitude for having the ease of entry and exit, that we did not have previously.  That additional gate and roadway has been crucial in times of congestion or traffic accidents on Grasslands Road, by providing access and egress to and from campus in those times of urgency or emergency.

It would be fitting to associate this roadway and gate with Dr. Hankin by naming them after him, and it is for this reason that I propose that the roadway be named, “Dr. Joseph N. Hankin Way”; and the gate, “Hankin Gate”.
