The Bahamas Town Planning Committee recently granted site plan approval for the massive Yntegra/Rosewood Hotels development on East Sampson Cay contingent on environmental approval by the Department of Environmental Protection and Planning (DEPP).
The reliance of another governmental authority on DEPP to determine the appropriate level of development based on environmental impact, makes proper analysis of this project even more important.
Yntegra and Rosewood Hotels are requesting a Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) from DEPP. To date however, Yntegra has not provided appropriate details in their Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) concerning the seabed dredging required to access the various facilities they intend to build.
Access to the northern supply dock as well as to the docks proposed on the west side of the island will require seabed dredging through seagrass, coral reefs and pristine tidal flats and recreational sandbars that will forever change the marine ecosystem of this pristine tourist destination. A formal analysis of the necessary dredging must be done before any type of decision can be properly considered.
