Petition to Explore Tennis Court Surface Conversion and Pickleball/Basketball Integration
Petition to Explore Tennis Court Surface Conversion and Pickleball/Basketball Integration
The Issue
To: Saturnia Homeowners Association Board of Directors
From: Saturnia Residents and Homeowners (see signatures below)
Subject: Request to Explore Options for Tennis Court Surface Conversion and Pickleball/Basketball Court Integration
Dear Members of the Board,
We, the undersigned residents of Saturnia, respectfully submit this petition to request that the Saturnia Homeowners Association explore options for modernizing the community tennis facilities by:
Evaluating the feasibility of converting the existing clay tennis courts to hard courts, and
Assessing the opportunity to repurpose one tennis court into dedicated pickleball courts, or a hybrid tennis/pickleball/basketball configuration.
Rationale for Consideration
This request is rooted in enhancing long‑term community value, increasing amenity utilization, and aligning Saturnia’s recreational offerings with current resident interests and broader trends in racquet sports. Also, provide a safe area for residents to play basketball.
Key considerations include:
Increased Demand and Participation
Pickleball participation has grown significantly nationwide and across Florida, with strong interest from residents of all ages. Dedicated courts would provide structured, safe play and reduce ad‑hoc usage on tennis courts. Current basketball court does not allow for safe play as ball can roll into active parking lot with limited barriers in place.
Maintenance and Cost Considerations
Clay courts typically require ongoing, specialized maintenance. Hard courts may offer lower long‑term maintenance costs, improved durability, and greater consistency of play throughout the year.
Improved Utilization of Amenities
Providing both tennis and pickleball options may increase overall usage of the courts, encourage social engagement, and enhance resident satisfaction.
Property Value and Community Appeal
Updated and versatile recreational amenities are increasingly viewed as a value‑add for prospective homeowners and contribute to Saturnia’s reputation as a well‑maintained, forward‑thinking community.
Requested Next Steps
We respectfully request that the Board consider the following actions:
Commission a feasibility and cost analysis comparing clay vs. hard courts
Explore design options for converting one tennis court into multiple pickleball courts (or a dual‑use configuration) and basketball court
Review budgetary impacts, reserve implications, and potential phased implementation. Solicit resident input through a survey, town hall, or committee. Present findings and recommendations at a future HOA meeting. This petition is not intended to pre‑determine an outcome, but rather to encourage thoughtful evaluation and open discussion around options that may benefit the Saturnia community both now and in the future.
We appreciate the Board’s continued dedication to maintaining and enhancing our neighborhood and thank you for your consideration of this request.
Respectfully submitted,
Saturnia Residents
