Petition to Expel the University of Utah from the Big 12 Conference

The Issue

Dear Esteemed Members of the Big 12 Executive/Membership Committee, and Commissioner Brett Yormak:

We, the undersigned, fans of the 15 of the Big 12's 15 members, hereby call upon conference leadership to take immediate action to expel the University of Utah from the Big 12 Conference.

The University of Utah does not share the values or culture that define the Big 12 Conference. Utah, and its fans, exhibit unwarranted arrogance, believing they are "too good" for the Big 12 while disparaging the other 15  members and their loyal fans. This elitist attitude is not grounded in actual achievement, Utah's arrogance stems from a misguided perception of the Big 12 as a conference comprised of hicks, rednecks, farmers, and hoopies. Such condescension is not only baseless but also disrespectful to the hardworking and passionate communities that make the Big 12 great.

Therefore, we urge Commissioner Brett Yormark and the Presidents and  Chancellors of the esteemed members of the conference, to expel the University of Utah from the Big 12 and add two deserving programs who share our values - Oregon State University and Washington State University.

Rationale for Expulsion:

  1. Attitude: The University of Utah, and its fans, exhibit undesirable traits such as Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy (the Dark Triad). The unwarranted arrogance of the Utes marks them as conference outlier - a program that fails to realize cooperation and the commitment to mutual prosperity for all members is the key to success.
  2. Selfishness: The University of Utah, by its actions and comments, has made it clear it sees its membership in the Big 12 as a marriage of convenance and will abandon the conference at the first opportunity. Utah's selfish position is contrary to the spirit of cooperation and unity that allowed the Big 12 to survive and thrive. The Big 12's future is brighter with members committed to the success of the conference. Utah is only committed to finding a way to leave the Big 12.
  3. Foolishness: The arrogance and lack of wisdom exhibited by Utah's senior leadership played a critical role in the downfall of the Pac 12. Media reports indicate Utah President Taylor Randall convinced other Pac 12 leaders to reject the media rights contract offered by ESPN/Fox due to Randall's belief the Pac 12 deserved $50m in TV rights per member, per year. The Big 12's security depends on wise leadership, not the folly exhibited by President Randall and the University of Utah.

For the reasons enumerated above, and others too numerous to document, we urge the Big 12 Conference to take swift and decisive action to restore order, sanity, and a sense of perspective to our beloved conference by quickly expelling the University of Utah from the Big 12.

In order to facilitate Utah's exit, we propose  the Big 12 Conference pay the Utes's entrance fee into the ACC Conference, plus a small fee of $5 million U.S. dollars to indemnify the Big 12 from any liability or harm Utah may cause the ACC in the future.
