Every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn, make friends, and participate in recreation programs where they feel safe, supported, and included. Unfortunately, many children with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities in Chula Vista have limited access to therapeutic recreation services. Since 2010, funding for these programs has been reduced, and little progress has been made to restore or expand services despite the growing needs of local families. This leaves many children without the specialized support they need to fully participate in community recreation. If we do nothing, families will continue to face limited opportunities, long waits, and a lack of inclusive programming. We are asking the City of Chula Vista to restore funding for Children’s Therapeutic Recreation, create permanent classified positions staffed by qualified professionals, and expand year-round programs that help children build social skills, confidence, independence, physical wellness, and meaningful community connections. These investments will create a stronger, more inclusive community where every child has the opportunity to thrive. The time to act is now. Families have waited long enough, and children cannot afford to wait another 5–10 years for these essential services. We urge the City of Chula Vista to make Children’s Therapeutic Recreation a budget priority and commit to meaningful action that supports children with disabilities and their families.
