Subject: Petition to Enforce the Gaborone City Council (Dog-Management) Bye-laws 2018

Dear Gaborone City Council,

We, the undersigned residents of Gaborone, hereby submit this petition to express our deep concern and urgency regarding the enforcement of the Gaborone City Council (Dog-Management) Bye-laws 2018. As responsible citizens and pet owners, we believe that these bylaws play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and overall well-being of our community.

The Gaborone City Council (Dog-Management) Bye-laws 2018 were established with the purpose of regulating dog ownership and promoting responsible dog ownership practices within our city. However, it has come to our attention that some of these essential regulations are not being adequately enforced, leading to various issues that negatively impact our neighbourhoods and community at large.

We, the signatories of this petition, humbly request the Gaborone City Council to take immediate action in enforcing the Gaborone City Council (Dog-Management) Bye-laws 2018, with special consideration being given to the following key provisions as a matter of urgency:

  • Registration of Breeders and Breeder Site Inspections: Introduce a comprehensive registration system for dog breeders and conduct regular inspections of breeder sites to ensure the ethical treatment of animals and the responsible breeding of dogs.
  • Licensing and Registration: Strengthen efforts to ensure that all dog owners have a valid license and registration for their pets, facilitating proper identification and responsible ownership. This will also aid in reuniting lost dogs with their owners and decrease the number of dogs involved in road accidents which is currently a big problem in the city.
  • Stray Dog Control: Develop effective strategies to manage and prevent the growth of the stray dog population in our city. Namely TNR campaigns and raising public awareness about the benefits of sterilization.

By enforcing these provisions and the others outlined in the bye-laws diligently, we believe that the Gaborone City Council will foster a safer, cleaner, and more harmonious community for all residents and their pets.

We, the undersigned, wholeheartedly support the Gaborone City Council's efforts to regulate dog ownership and uphold the Gaborone City Council (Dog-Management) Bye-laws 2018. We urge you to take swift action in implementing and enforcing these regulations, as they are crucial for the welfare and coexistence of our community.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust that you will consider our petition with the utmost seriousness and take the necessary steps to improve dog management in our city.

Sincerely,

Animal Assist Trust Foundation Botswana
