Petition to End Gender Identity Disparity in Divorce Documentation

Petition to End Gender Identity Disparity in Divorce Documentation
The Issue
Petition to End Gendered Identity Disparity
in Divorce Documentation
To Whom It May Concern
We , the concerned citizens ,call upon relevant legal and governmental authorities to address and rectify a discriminatory practice embedded in divorce documentation — one that reinforces patriarchal norms by diminishing a woman's individual identity.
In official divorce papers across various jurisdictions, it is commonplace for the woman to be identified solely as “wife of [husband’s name]”, while the man is identified as “son of [father’s name].” This linguistic discrepancy not only perpetuates outdated gender roles but symbolically erases a woman’s independent familial and personal identity at a moment of crucial transition.
Why This Matters
- Identity Reduction: Labeling women exclusively through spousal ties implies their existence is contingent upon marriage, unlike men who retain lineage-based identity.
- Legal Parity: Divorce is the dissolution of a mutual contract. Language must reflect equal standing—not reinforce power imbalance.
- Human Dignity: Every individual deserves the right to be recognized by their own name and family ties, regardless of gender or marital status.
Our Demands
1. Reform Legal Templates to ensure both parties are identified by full legal names and parental lineage equally (e.g., “[Full Name], daughter/son of…”).
2. Issue Advisory Guidelines to registrars and legal drafters to eliminate gendered biases in identity attribution.
3. Launch Sensitization Campaigns to raise awareness of subtle linguistic discrimination in family law processes.
This change is not just a matter of semantics—it’s a matter of justice. Language shapes perception, and perception drives policy. Let us not allow archaic phrasing to define modern womanhood.
We stand for dignity, equity, and the right to be named fully and fairly.
Sincerely,
Daisy Mangal
