Petition to DCSD Board to re-consider DSA's bid for soccer complex land or alternatives
The Issue
This Petition is for eligible voters in the City of Dubuque, Iowa and Dubuque Community School District.
Dubuque Soccer supporters over the last 30 years fundraised and organized the Dubuque community to develop land owned by the School District into the Soccer and Cross-Country Complex that exists today, raising over $700,000 in direct and an estimated $2 million in donations and in-kind work. After 30 years and three 10-year lease terms, the School District wants to sell the land. The Soccer Association (DSA) bid $1.55 million to purchase the land, but that is threatened by a higher private party bid of $1.8 million which risks Dubuque soccer and cross-country's secure future and ends a 30-year non-profit/community partnership that has overwhelmingly yielded benefits for our city and community.
Pursuant to Iowa Code section 279.8B, eligible voters in the Dubuque school district of at least 500 can petition the local school board with a proposal to add as agenda item to include in their meeting agenda and requires sufficient time for public comment. Include your name and address on this petition (in the comments) to the DCSD Board to re-consider DSA's bid for the land or alternatives that would better secure Dubuque Soccer and the DCSD's future than a quick sale, in light of public concern and opposition to the School Board's motion to negotiate only with the alternate bidder to DSA on Wednesday, August 24, 2022.
The next School Board meeting on the property sale is this week Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 4 p.m. The DSA or any Dubuque Soccer Club board members were not a part of this petition creation or distribution. This is solely a community-led initiative. Change can happen, but we believe it should happen with the Dubuque Soccer Community in the lead to build on their investment and secure equitable access for the future, including for School District cross-country and other community-based needs.
Please share your address in the comments when you sign if you are willing, a paper or related petition may be available at another time with an address field.
