Thank you for signing our petition asking the parole board to deny parole to Jose Gonzalez. So far, the petition has been signed by more than 2,900 people!
In 2008, California voters passed Proposition 8, the Victims' Bill of Rights Act, also known as Marsy's Law. As stated in Marsy's Law, one of its primary purposes was to spare the families of homicide victims from the ordeal of frequent parole hearings. Accordingly, the Law provided that "a convicted murderer can receive a parole hearing no more frequently than every three years. . . ."
Despite that provision, the parole board has routinely been holding parole hearings for Gonzalez more frequently than every three years. The board almost did it again this year.
Gonzalez's last parole hearing was in February 2019, so his next hearing should have been set for no sooner than February 2022. Nonetheless, the board set the hearing for October 15, 2020. At the last minute, the hearing was postponed due to an emergency involving one of the members of the parole board's hearing panel.
By law, the board is required to give at least 90 days notice before the next hearing, so it can take place no sooner than January 2021. We will let you know what happens at that hearing.
