The Issue

Dogs are more than just pets; they are beloved members of our families. As a resident of Austin, Texas, specifically at the Cumberland Drive neighborhood park across from the South Austin Recreation Center, at 1100 Cumberland Dr.Austin TX 78704. Specifically, in the numerous forested areas where an off leash dog area could be established.

I have experienced firsthand the joy and companionship that comes with having a dog. However, our South Austin community is currently lacking a dedicated space for our furry friends to safely play and socialize. It is with this deep personal connection and understanding of the community's needs that I propose the creation of a neighborhood off leash dog park near the community center on Cumberland Drive.

Our neighborhood is rapidly growing, with families and pet owners flocking to the area due to its welcoming environment and vibrant community. However, with this growth comes the need for more public amenities that cater to the well-being of all residents, including our dogs. Currently, the nearest public dog park is 2 miles away, making it difficult for many residents to provide their dogs with the free space they need to run and interact with other dogs. This lack of a local space not only impacts the physical and social health of our dogs but also limits community interactions among pet owners.

Studies have shown that dog parks increase community engagement, reduce stress levels for both pets and owners, and even enhance property values. They provide a safe environment where dogs can exercise off-leash, which is essential for their mental and physical health. Moreover, dog parks serve as a gathering place, strengthening community bonds among residents who often meet and share experiences while their pets play.

The community center on Cumberland Drive is an ideal location for a dog park. It is centrally located, easily accessible to local residents, and has ample space to accommodate a dog-friendly environment. Transforming part of the community center's outdoor space into a dog park would not only utilize shaded forest land effectively but also enhance the center's role as a focal point for community activities.

We propose a sustainable and volunteer-managed dog park, utilizing local resources and community efforts to keep maintenance costs low. Features could include secure fencing in the shaded areas and make watering stations, waste disposal stations, and seating for pet owners. This initiative could be funded through community fundraisers, local business partnerships, and potential grants aimed at community development.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a cause that will benefit both the human and canine members of our community. Together, we can create a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for our dogs and foster a stronger, more connected neighborhood. Sign now to help make the Cumberland Drive community center dog park a reality for Austin, Texas.

“Thank you for your petition regarding a future Dog Off Leash Area (DOLA) at South Austin Neighborhood Park. Based on a preliminary review, South Austin Neighborhood Park is not recommended for a designated off-leash area due to several site constraints. The park has a high concentration of established amenities and active programming through the recreation center, leaving limited remaining open space that could accommodate an appropriately sized fenced off-leash area that meets departmental standards for size, safety, and buffer distance from the playground, sport fields, and adjacent homes. The largest open area, the athletic field, is heavily used for Recreation Center programs and has recently received investment in new grading, irrigation, and fencing. Additionally, Austin Parks and Recreation has been coordinating with Watershed Protection Department on significant drainage issues in the northern and eastern portions of the park. The planned storm water control features throughout the park to address these issues will further impact the park's available space.
