City of Glen Eira: Declare a climate emergency

Australia is not doing enough to solve climate change. The effects of climate change are already being felt across the planet, including in Australia. We ALL need to take action; from local communities and small businesses to multi-national organisations and media outlets, from not-for-profit and non-government organisations to all levels of government. Australia's federal government has not yet listened to the people, so we need to mobilise and use the democratic system available to us to send federal and state governments a message - we demand climate justice, we must declare a climate emergency and agree to the principles for a way forward, set the policies and work towards a cleaner, safer environment.

As Greta Thunberg says "Our house is on fire" so we need to start acting like it.

That's why I am calling on the City of Glen Eira to declare a climate emergency.

More than 99% of scientists "agree that humans are causing global warming", and more than 60 per cent of Australians agree with the sentiment that "Global warming is a serious and pressing problem." Here in Australia, it was Darebin Council in Melbourne who became the first council in the world to recognise the climate emergency in December 2016.

We have been given 12 years to drastically reduce emissions, lest our world warm to the point where humans face an existential threat.  We cannot wait until the next Federal election. We need all action at all levels of government.

I am calling on my local council to respect the will of the people and embrace climate action. We request that you declare a climate emergency.  This would demonstrate a concrete commitment, a willingness to stand together and fight to prevent the largest threat of our times.
