Evie Hairsine started this petition to Sheffield City Council

Sheffield is Europe's greenest city, but many of us feel unable to benefit from using its parks and green spaces.

In 2017, a petition demanding that Sheffield City Council improve the lighting in parks received over 800 signatures following a sexual assault in Weston park on the Sheffield University campus. 4 years later, women and marginalised people still feel unsafe due to the lack of lighting in our parks, and experience heightened vulnerability to being followed or sexually assaulted. This is stopping us from accessing green spaces after 4pm in winter, which has negative implications for our mental and physical health, especially during lockdown, and prevents us from feeling like equal citizens with a right to use our city.

Our Bodies Our Streets is an intersectional feminist campaign group at the University of Sheffield, trying to tackle the issue of public sexual harassment. We are asking Sheffield city council to make us feel safer to go running or walking in the parks after sunset by reviewing the amount of lighting in all of their parks and improving it where needed.

Given that the council has spent a huge amount of money on renovating in the city centre, we think they can afford to put our safety first by putting more lights in our parks, making the city healthier, happier and more welcoming for all.
