Petition to Change the Law Regarding the Pre-Trial Release of Child Predators in Alberta/C
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Alberta/Canada to take immediate action to amend the laws regarding the pre-trial release of individuals charged with offenses related to child predation.
Background: In recent years, there has been a growing concern regarding the release of individuals accused of child predation before their court dates. These individuals pose a significant risk to the safety and well-being of our children and communities. Current laws allow for the release of these offenders, under conditions that may not adequately protect vulnerable members of society
We believe that:
1. Protecting Children is Paramount: The safety of our children should always be the top priority. Those accused of serious crimes against minors should not be allowed to return to society until they are proven innocent or convicted.
2. The Risk of Recidivism: Studies indicate that offenders charged with sexual offenses, particularly those against children, have a high risk of reoffending. Allowing pre-trial release increases the danger that these individuals will commit further offenses.
3. Public Confidence in the Justice System: Allowing the release of individuals charged with such serious crimes undermines public confidence in our justice system. Citizens have the right feel safe in their communities.
4. Need for Stronger Protective Measures: We urge the government to establish stricter bail conditions, including mandatory detention for individuals accused of child predation until their court hearings.
Therefore, we request that:
The laws regarding the pre-trial release of individuals charged with child predation be reviewed and amended to ensure stricter guidelines that prioritize the safety of children and the community.
The implementation of mandatory detention before trial for all individuals charged with offenses related to child predation.
Signatures: We, the undersigned, support this petition and urge our representatives take swift action to ensure the safety of children and communities.
