Petition to bring rent control into Alberta
The Issue
Petition for Rent Control
To the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, in Legislature Assembled.
We, the undersigned residents of Alberta note that:
Housing is a basic human right and therefore rental rates should not be determined solely by rental unit supply and demand and what a landlord wishes to charge.
Unreasonable rental increases lead to tenant displacement and homelessness.
Tenants in Alberta require greater housing security so they can budget and plan for the future, and participate in their community.
Currently in Alberta, a landlord can legally increase a tenant’s rent by 100%, 200% or any amount they wish on an annual basis.
In 2023 the average Alberta rent has increased 25-40% over the previous year.
Therefore, We the undersigned residents of Alberta, call on all Members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta to update the Residential Tenancy Act to include rent control in Alberta with a reasonable cap on annual rent increases.
