Petition to Bring a World-Class Zoo to Grand Junction, Colorado
The Issue
We, the residents and supporters of Grand Junction, believe our community deserves a modern, educational, and conservation-focused zoo that can serve Western Colorado for generations to come.
Grand Junction is one of the largest and fastest-growing communities on Colorado’s Western Slope, yet families must travel hours to experience major wildlife attractions like the Denver Zoo or San Diego Zoo. Our region has the population, tourism potential, natural beauty, and community pride needed to support a destination zoo of our own.
A Grand Junction zoo could:
- Create new jobs and economic growth
- Increase tourism across Western Colorado
- Provide hands-on education for schools and children
- Support wildlife conservation and rescue programs
- Offer year-round family recreation
- Strengthen Grand Junction’s identity as a regional destination city
This would not simply be an animal attraction. It would be a conservation center, educational facility, botanical destination, and community landmark designed with modern animal welfare standards and environmental responsibility.
Grand Junction already attracts visitors for outdoor recreation, national parks, and desert beauty. A professionally planned zoo could complement these strengths while bringing additional visitors, businesses, and revenue into our local economy.
We call upon:
- The Grand Junction City Council
- Mesa County leadership
- Colorado state representatives
- Local business leaders
- Community organizations
- Private investors and donors
to begin exploring the feasibility of creating a world-class zoo and wildlife conservation park in Grand Junction.
Possible features could include:
- Native Colorado wildlife exhibits
- African safari habitats
- Aquarium and reptile centers
- Interactive educational programs
- Wildlife rehabilitation partnerships
- Botanical gardens and walking trails
- Family attractions and seasonal events
Other cities have transformed their economies and communities through landmark attractions. Grand Junction has the opportunity to build something extraordinary for future generations.
We respectfully ask city and county leaders to commission feasibility studies, identify potential land opportunities, and open public discussions regarding the creation of a Grand Junction Zoo and Conservation Park.
Together, we can create a destination that inspires children, supports conservation, grows tourism, and gives Western Colorado a landmark worthy of its future.
