The Issue

It's no secret that a lot of movies and series yet to come will be impacted by the writer's strike but also the actors strikes due to stars of movies and series being unable to promote them, a crucial piece to a film's marketing campaign. One of the films I'm concerned and fear will be the most negatively affected by the strikes is Walt Disney Animation Studios' Wish, a film that is personal for me to see succeed as it is the culmination of 100 years of Disney animated storytelling and given Disney's rough 100th anniversary at the box office with a lot of films that have flopped, bombed & underperformed for them, except for Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and (to an extent) Disney & Pixar's Elemental, they can't afford to let Wish be a failure for them. This is an arguably important film for the company and for the aniamtion division, too. And if it fails, it will cost a lot of people their jobs, specifically the animators and storytellers at Walt Disney Animation Studios who are working hard to keep their jobs when 7,000 people across Disney's many film and TV studio divisions were laid off by Bob Iger to cut costs and try to make the company profitable again. But, that's not all that could happen if Wish fails.

There's much more at stake with the financial outcome of Wish than many people are willing to look at. Given this film's going to bring a different kind of animation for the company, one that blends 2D/hand-drawn animation with computer animation in a style similar to Disney's Oscar-winning short Paperman, it is crucial that this film, if it's as great as it's claimed be, be a hit at the box office wordwide, especially as a the film is said to come with a pricey $200 million dollar budget, heightening the stakes for this film to be a hit after a few $150-$400M films have failed for Disney at the box office. The first reason has to do with this film being the last chance for Disney to return to hand-drawn animation when it comes to the upcoming Disney+ sequel series to The Princess and the Frog that Walt Disney Animation Studios is working on called Tiana, especially given the short film playing before Wish called "Once Upon A Studio" is said to celebrate the animation styles in Disney's 100-year history (including hand-drawn animation), and if Wish succeeds at the box office, that could sway Disney to be motivated to go back to hand-drawn animation for future stories. But if it fails, they could just decide to not do it ever again. And the second reason that Wish needs to be a hit is because if it fails, it could be the final nail in the coffin for the future of animation at Disney and Walt Disney Aniamtion Studios could literally shut down this time as there were fears that would happen after the failure of The Black Cauldron, and I can't have the happening again when I see that people want original animation to be better treated in Hollywood.

So right now, with only 68 days until the theatrical release of Disney's Wish, I feel the time to fight for Disney to ensure this movie is a success at the global box office must begin now. The best way to make that happen is to call on Disney (specifically their CEO Bob Iger) and the SAG-AFTRA guild (whether it be their leader Fran Drescher or whoever else I can get in touch with) to agree to make a deal an interim agreement with permission from SAG to allow for the big actors of this movie (Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, and Alan Tudyk) to promote this movie on a global world tour which can allow for the film to have a proper marketing campaign so it can be a box office hit when it comes out. I know people are questioning if this is even possible knowing they feel interim agreements would be more related to smaller films from smaller companies. Well to that I say to them that a Walking Dead series was allowed a waiver/interim agreement to be promoted by the actors and actresses, and that's from a major franchise. So, if a major blockbuster TV series like Walking Dead can get an interim agreement, so can a big movie from Disney like Wish, which I believe deserves it more than The Marvels, as I think that film will be a failure compared to Wish. The time to fight for Wish to be a success is now and we don't stop fighting for it until we've won. So, I hope you can all help me make this happen, because the clock is ticking and time is running out, now more than ever.
