Petition to BBC Persian: Uphold Your Editorial Standards and Remove the Unjust Article Comparing Queen Farah Pahlavi and Asma Al-Assad 

We, the undersigned who are the supporters of journalistic integrity and equity, are writing to express our strong dismay and disappointment regarding the article published on the BBC Persian website on 16th December 2024 (link: https://www.bbc.com/persian/articles/cj492xwx825o). This article unjustifiably compares Queen Farah Pahlavi, the last Empress of Iran, with Asma al-Assad, the last First Lady of Syria. Such a comparison is deeply troubling and offensive, as it overlooks the distinct historical, cultural, and political contexts of their roles and fails to provide a fair or impartial analysis.

The article appears to violate the BBC’s own editorial guidelines in several key areas:

• Section 1: Editorial Standards – The comparison in the article lacks rigor and balance, resulting in a narrative that misrepresents both figures. This questions the credibility and professionalism expected of the BBC.
• Section 4: Impartiality – The article fails to demonstrate impartiality by equating two individuals whose actions, historical circumstances, and legacies are vastly different. This creates a biased perspective that does not align with the public interest, nor does it foster informed discussion.
• Section 5: Harm and Offence – By drawing this unjust comparison, the article causes significant harm and offence to the Iranian community, particularly to those who view Queen Farah Pahlavi as a symbol of cultural and historical significance. Such content exacerbates divisions and discontent within the audience.
• Section 6: Fairness– The article’s portrayal of Queen Farah Pahlavi and Asma al-Assad lacks fairness, as it does not sufficiently consider the broader contexts of their lives and contributions. This creates an unbalanced and unfair depiction that undermines the standards of responsible journalism.

We believe that this article is not only an insult to the readers’ intelligence but also challenges the trust placed in BBC Persian as a source of unbiased and high-quality reporting. As members of a global community who value journalistic ethics and integrity, we the undersigned urge BBC Persian to:

1. Conduct a thorough review of the article’s content and its adherence to the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
2. Remove the article from its platform to prevent further harm and offense.
3. Issue a public acknowledgment of the concerns raised by the target audience through their own very media.
4. Provide assurances that future content will adhere to the highest journalistic standards.

The BBC is expected to uphold values of impartiality and professionalism, which are central to the reputation of any media. We call on you to respect these values and take swift action to address this matter.

ما امضا کنندگان متن زیر که حامیان صداقت و انصاف در روزنامه نگاری هستیم، ابراز تاسف و ناامیدی شدید خود در رابطه با مقاله منتشر شده در وب سایت بی بی سی فارسی در تاریخ ۱٦ دسامبر ٢٠٢٤ را اعلام می داریم

این مقاله به طور غیر قابل توجیهی شهبانو فرح پهلوی، آخرین ملکه ایران را با اسماء اسد آخرین بانوی اول سوریه مقایسه می کند. چنین مقایسه‌ای عمیقاً نگران‌کننده و توهین‌آمیز است، زیرا زمینه‌های متمایز تاریخی، فرهنگی و سیاسی نقش‌های آنها را نادیده می‌گیرد و نمی‌تواند تحلیلی منصفانه یا بی‌طرفانه ارائه دهد.

به نظر می‌رسد این مقاله دستورالعمل‌های بی‌بی‌سی را در چندین زمینه کلیدی نقض می‌کند

بند ۱ استانداردهای نگارش مقاله:  مقایسه در مقاله فاقد دقت و تعادل است و منجر به روایتی می شود که هر دو شکل را نادرست نشان می دهد. این اعتبار و حرفه ای بودن مورد انتظار از بی بی سی را مورد سوال قرار می دهد

بند ٤ بی طرفی: این مقاله نمی تواند بی طرفی` را با معادل سازی دو فردی که اعمال، شرایط تاریخی و میراث آنها بسیار متفاوت است نشان دهد. این امر دیدگاهی مغرضانه ایجاد می کند که در راستای منافع عمومی نیست و بحث آگاهانه را تقویت نمی کند.

بند ٥ آسیب و توهین: این مقاله با انجام این مقایسه ناعادلانه، آسیب و آزار قابل توجهی را متوجه جامعه ایرانی، به ویژه کسانی که شهبانو فرح پهلوی را نمادی از اهمیت فرهنگی و تاریخی می دانند، وارد می کند. چنین محتوایی باعث تشدید اختلاف و نارضایتی در بین مخاطبان می شود

بند ٦ عدالت و انصاف: - تصویر ارایه شده از شهبانو فرح پهلوی و اسماء اسد در این مقاله فاقد انصاف است، زیرا به اندازه کافی زمینه های زندگی و مشارکت آنها را در نظر نمی گیرد. این تصویری نامتعادل و ناعادلانه ایجاد می کند که استانداردهای روزنامه نگاری مسئولانه را نادیده می گیرد

ما بر این باوریم که نگارش و نشر این مقاله نه تنها توهین به شعور مخاطبین است، بلکه اعتمادی که به بی‌بی‌سی فارسی به‌عنوان منبع گزارش‌های بی‌طرفانه و با کیفیت بالا داده شده است را به چالش می کشد. ما امضا کنندگان این متن به عنوان اعضای جامعه جهانی که به اخلاق و یکپارچگی روزنامه نگاری اهمیت می دهد، خواهان آن هستیم که بی‌بی‌سی فارسی

 یکم:محتوای کامل مقاله مزبور و میزان همخوانی آن با دستورالعمل‌های بی‌بی‌سی را بررسی کند

دوم: مقاله را از پلتفرم خود حذف کرده  تا از آسیب و توهین بیشتر جلوگیری شود

سوم: نسبت به نگرانی های ایجاد شده در جامعه مخاطبین هدف از طریق همان رسانه عذرخواهی  کند

چهارم: ضمانت هایی مبنی بر اینکه محتوای آینده با بالاتری استانداردهای روزنامه نگاری مطابقت داشته باشد را ارائه دهد

انتظار می‌رود که بی‌بی‌سی از ارزش‌های چون بی‌طرفی و حرفه‌ای بودن که در شهرت هر رسانه نقش اساسی دارد، حمایت کند. ما از شما می خواهیم که به این ارزش ها احترام گذاشته و در رسیدگی به این موضوع اقدام عاجل را انجام دهید
