The Issue

To: The Government of the British Virgin Islands, House of Assembly
Cc: Ministry of Health & Social Development

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of the British Virgin Islands, and the House of Assembly to enact legislation banning the use, import, and sale of products containing Red Dye #3 (Erythrosine).

Why Ban Red Dye #3?
Red Dye #3 is a synthetic food coloring widely recognized for its bright red hue, but it comes with significant health risks:

Carcinogenic Properties: Scientific studies have shown that high doses of Red Dye #3 are linked to thyroid tumors in laboratory animals, raising concerns about its potential to contribute to cancer in humans.

Impact on Children: Research has connected Red Dye #3 to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children, particularly those with attention-related conditions like ADHD.

Endocrine Disruption: Red Dye #3 interferes with hormonal balance, posing risks to overall health.

Despite these risks, Red Dye #3 is still found in candies, baked goods, medications, and beverages sold in the BVI, putting the health of our community—especially our children—at unnecessary risk.

Our Call to Action
We demand the following measures to protect the health and well-being of the people of the British Virgin Islands:

Legislative Ban: Enact legislation to prohibit the use, import, and sale of food, beverages, and medications containing Red Dye #3.

Increased Monitoring: Strengthen food safety regulations to ensure harmful additives like Red Dye #3 are no longer allowed in locally available products.

Public Education: Launch an awareness campaign to inform citizens about the dangers of Red Dye #3 and promote healthier alternatives.

Business Incentives: Provide support for businesses to stock and promote safer, dye-free products.

Together, We Can Protect Our Community. By banning Red Dye #3, the BVI can join a growing list of health-conscious nations that prioritize the well-being of their citizens over the convenience of harmful additives. This is a crucial step toward reducing preventable cancer risks, safeguarding children’s health, and ensuring a safer, healthier future for our Territory.
