The Issue

To the Government of Canada, Members of Parliament, and All Concerned Citizens,

We, the undersigned, are petitioning for a nationwide ban on personal fireworks in Canada. Fireworks, while a popular tradition for celebrations such as Canada Day and New Year's Eve, are a growing source of distress and danger to both animals and people. It is time for our country to consider the well-being of its citizens—both human and animal—by taking action to prevent the unnecessary suffering caused by personal fireworks.

1. The Suffering of Our Pets
Every year, countless dogs and other pets across Canada are terrified by the loud, unpredictable sounds of fireworks. For many, the experience of fireworks is an overwhelming nightmare. The fear and anxiety caused by the loud bangs and flashes of light can result in pets running away, harming themselves, or requiring emergency veterinary care. Some animals suffer such extreme panic that they may experience heart attacks, severe injury, or death in the chaos.

Studies have shown that fireworks can trigger a deep sense of distress in animals due to their sensitive hearing and their inability to understand what is happening. Pets, especially dogs, are often left cowering in fear, pacing frantically, or trying to escape. In addition to the direct harm caused, the ongoing anxiety associated with fireworks can have long-term negative effects on their mental and physical health.

2. The Impact on Veterans Living with PTSD
Canada has sent thousands of brave men and women to serve in conflict zones, including Afghanistan, over the past two decades. Many of these veterans returned home suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to their experiences in combat. For these individuals, loud noises—like the sound of fireworks—can act as triggers, evoking terrifying memories of battle and the trauma they experienced.

PTSD is a serious mental health condition, and sudden, loud noises can cause veterans to relive distressing memories, leading to panic attacks, flashbacks, and heightened anxiety. This not only affects their mental health but can also disrupt their daily lives, relationships, and overall well-being. The distress caused by fireworks, whether on holidays or throughout the year, can put their recovery at risk and make them feel unsafe in their own communities.

3. A Call for Compassion and Change
While fireworks can be a form of entertainment for some, the damage they cause to animals and people with PTSD far outweighs their brief moments of enjoyment. We believe it is time for Canada to adopt a more compassionate and considerate approach to public celebrations. Many countries around the world have moved towards alternatives to personal fireworks, using light shows or community displays that do not cause harm or distress.

We urge the Government of Canada to take the following actions:

Ban the sale and use of personal fireworks across Canada.
Encourage community-based, organized fireworks displays that can be enjoyed responsibly, with consideration for the well-being of animals and veterans.
Raise awareness about the impact of fireworks on animals and people with PTSD through educational campaigns and resources.
Promote alternative methods of celebration, such as light shows, music, and other festive events that do not pose harm to animals or individuals living with PTSD.
4. A Safer, More Compassionate Canada
By banning personal fireworks, we can help create a safer and more compassionate environment for all Canadians. Our pets, many of whom are beloved members of our families, deserve to live without fear. Our veterans, who have sacrificed so much for our country, deserve a peaceful and supportive environment where they can feel safe and heal.

We believe that with your support, we can make this important change. Together, we can protect our pets, support our veterans, and ensure that celebrations in Canada are inclusive, kind, and respectful of all those who call this country home.
