There has been widespread revulsion towards Ireland's greyhound industry since the screening by the country's national TV Channel, RTE, in June, of an investigative programme that focused on ill-treatment of greyhounds.

It exposed how up to 6000 (the figure may be much bigger) of the dogs disappear every year; and showed shocking footage of greyhounds being inhumanely killed.

Now, to add to this litany of abuse, RTE Radio has broadcast a programme that sheds light on on the linked practice of blooding. In an interview broadcast on August 6th on RTE's Liveline programme, a County Tipperary woman describes what happened to her cat when greyhound owners came calling.

Blooding is an integral part of both hare coursing and greyhound racing in Ireland: Live animals are used to tease the greyhounds, or feed live to them; the aim being to enhance a dog's performance on the track or coursing field.

Blooding is yet another reason why this nightmarish "industry" must be closed down.
