Owen McKenna, considered the "shining star" of Ireland's greyhound industry, has been fined for five separate doping offences involving five different greyhounds.
An Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) report (October 2017) details findings against the trainer, revealing he has received five fines of 200 euros each in relation to use of prohibited substances to enhance performance of his dogs. Prize money was also forfeited.
The trainer first came to prominence in 1994 when he was filmed with other "sportsmen" at a daylight blooding session in County Tipperary, feeding live rabbits to greyhounds. This practice is widespread in Ireland, with cats, hares, rabbits and small birds serving as bait in the sessions that precede both coursing and track racing.
Despite that scandal, he was lionized within the industry. He went on to train many dogs, scoop numerous awards, and even to act as a high profile PR man for greyhound racing in Ireland. He frequently emphasized the importance of promoting the "positive aspects" of the greyhound industry.
