Many people involved in animal rights/welfare/conservation campaigns reach a point when they ask: is it worth it? Or they feel burned out and that there’s no point in continuing. I think the answer to that question is YES. It’s always worth the effort.
The anti bullfighting campaign for example seems to go on forever, but look at how attitudes are changing...even in Spain and other countries that permit this barbarism. And some regions have banned it.
Thanks to the work and dedication of campaigners everywhere the world is slowly but surely becoming a more compassionate for animals. Slow progress is better than no progress. Every individual who speaks out, or joins a protest, or signs a petition is making a difference.
My own experience included some fearful challenges but I found that even seemingly insurmountable obstacles tend to melt away or become far less challenging if you persist.
Burnout can be avoided by taking breaks every now and then. And it SHOULD be avoided. None of us have any value to a cause if we run ourselves into the ground. We can only do so much in a given time period. Everyone needs a break.
I wrote about my own experience of campaigning on a difficult animal cruelty issue and I’d encourage others to do likewise. Look at all the books and magazines that promote blood sports, trapping, shooting etc.
Let’s tip the balance in favour of compassion for sentient beings by writing articles and books that promote that ethos.
The opening chapters of my own book can be read freely on the online page:
