Petition to Ban Cat Declawing in the United States

Petition to Ban Cat Declawing in the United States
The Issue
The United States Congress
Subject: Nationwide Prohibition of Cat Declawing for Humane Animal Treatment
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the United States Congress to enact a federal ban on the practice of cat declawing throughout the United States.
Background:
Declawing, or onychectomy, involves amputating the last bone of each toe, which is equivalent to removing the end of a human finger at the last joint. This invasive surgical procedure causes severe pain, long-term physical complications, and behavioral issues in cats. It is performed primarily for the convenience of cat owners, rather than for any medical benefit to the animal.
Why a Nationwide Ban is Necessary:
Animal Welfare Concerns: The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Humane Society, and other animal welfare organizations oppose declawing unless medically necessary. It can lead to chronic pain, arthritis, nerve damage, and behavioral changes, including aggression and litter box avoidance.
Availability of Humane Alternatives: Humane and effective alternatives to declawing are readily accessible, including scratching posts, nail caps, behavioral training, and regular nail trimming.
Global and Domestic Precedents: Declawing is already banned in many countries, including the UK, Australia, and several European nations. Domestically, New York State and multiple U.S. cities have prohibited declawing, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of this legislation.
Our Request:
We call upon the United States Congress to introduce and pass federal legislation that:
Prohibits the performance of elective onychectomy or tendonectomy procedures on cats nationwide.
Allows exceptions only when deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian to treat injury, illness, or disease.
Enforces penalties for non-compliance to ensure the humane treatment of cats.
Conclusion:
By banning cat declawing nationwide, the United States would join other progressive nations in prioritizing animal welfare. Cats deserve to live free from unnecessary pain and suffering, and it is our moral responsibility to protect them from harmful and outdated practices.
