Petition to Ashland City Commissioners / Proposed Purchase of the Paramount Arts Center

Petition to Ashland City Commissioners / Proposed Purchase of the Paramount Arts Center
The Issue
We, the undersigned members of the Ashland community and supporters of the Paramount Arts Center and Paramount Players, respectfully petition the City Commissioners to consider the following as part of the proposed purchase of the Paramount's real property and fixed assets.
The Paramount Arts Center has been a cornerstone of our local culture, preserving both the history and the artistic spirit of our community. It plays a critical role in fostering the performing arts and providing educational programs for our children and future generations. We are deeply appreciative of the City of Ashland's efforts to support the Paramount during this challenging time, and we recognize the necessity of addressing the financial difficulties currently faced by the theater.
However, we believe that it is vital to ensure that, under the City’s proposed ownership structure, the Paramount remains a historical nonprofit institution that is dedicated to promoting local performing arts and arts education.
To that end, we request the following commitments from the City:
1. Preservation of the Paramount’s Mission:
The Paramount must continue to function as a performing arts center with a focus on local talent, education, and the cultural enrichment of Ashland and the tristate region’s residents.
2. Support for Local Performing Arts Groups:
The Paramount Players, as well as other local arts organizations, must be prioritized and supported. Community-driven performances and programs should be given priority, including sufficient access to the facilities, as well as the resources necessary to thrive.
3. Continuation and Expansion of Arts Education:
The Paramount’s educational programs, particularly those for children, must not only be maintained but expanded. These programs are crucial to inspiring creativity and providing opportunities for young people in our community.
4. Collaborative Efforts to Ensure Financial Stability:
We are committed to working with the City, the Paramount Board of Directors, and management to help improve the operations of the Paramount and develop a plan that ensures its long-term financial sustainability. Our goal is to see the Paramount thrive as a financially viable performing arts center without sacrificing its core mission.
In closing, we, the undersigned, believe that with the right commitments in place, the Paramount Arts Center can continue to be a vital cultural institution in Ashland for generations to come. We urge the City of Ashland to protect the legacy and future of this beloved landmark by including these priorities in its plans for the Paramount. Thank you for your consideration.
