Petition to Address Skyrocketing Electric Bills in New York
The Issue
To: New York State Congressional Delegation, Governor Kathy Hochul, and the Public Service Commission
We, the undersigned residents of New York, demand immediate action to address the unbearable electric bill increases that have burdened households across the state over the past two months. Many New Yorkers have seen their utility bills double or even triple, with some facing monthly costs exceeding $500 for modest apartments. These spikes, driven by factors such as global energy market fluctuations and proposed rate hikes by utilities like Con Edison, are unsustainable and threaten the financial stability of working families, seniors, and low-income households.
We call on Congress, in collaboration with state leaders, to introduce and pass legislation that provides:
Immediate Bill Relief: A one-time credit to offset the electric bill increases from January and February 2025, modeled after the $672 million utility bill relief program of 2023, targeting all affected New York households, not just low-income ones.
Rate Hike Oversight: A federal review of Con Edison’s proposed 11.4% electricity and 13.3% gas rate increases, ensuring transparency and justification before approval.
Energy Affordability Guarantee Expansion: Extend the Energy Affordability Guarantee, currently a pilot for low-income households, to cap electricity costs at 6% of income for all New Yorkers struggling with these spikes.
Investment in Renewables: Allocate federal funds to accelerate New York’s transition to renewable energy, reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and stabilizing future costs.
These measures are critical to protect New Yorkers from financial hardship and ensure equitable access to essential utilities. We cannot allow corporate profits to take precedence over the well-being of our communities.
Why This Matters:
Over 1.3 million New York households are 60 days or more behind on utility bills, with $1.8 billion in arrears as of December 2024.
Con Edison’s proposed rate hikes could add over $60 monthly to the average residential bill, exacerbating the crisis.
New Yorkers are venting their frustration on social media, with hundreds of complaints flooding platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit, highlighting the urgency of this issue.
