Petition to Address Dangerous Traffic in the Outer Hwy 10 Area
The Issue
Date: 03/23/2025
We, the residents of the Outer Hwy 10 area, urge immediate action to address the growing danger caused by reckless drivers using our neighborhood as a detour when the I-10 Freeway is backed up—which now seems to be a daily occurrence.
Drivers are treating our residential streets as if they were still on the freeway, creating hazardous conditions. To avoid a stop sign on Outer Hwy 10 at the bridge or overpass, many turn onto 17th St, race around the bend on Florida, and speed down to 16th. Others come down Florida from Alta Vista, recklessly entering oncoming traffic where Florida meets Florida at the end of 17th St. There is no stop sign at this intersection, and many drivers do not even slow down or check for oncoming traffic before proceeding.
Many of us can see the I-10 from our homes, and on 03/19/2025, during an extreme traffic backup, we witnessed two cars racing side by side for at least half a mile through our residential streets. A police officer was parked on 17th St with their lights on, yet drivers continued speeding past, completely disregarding their presence. If officers were actively pulling drivers over, perhaps others would slow down—but why are we paying for enforcement that isn’t making a difference?
Our community members are afraid to walk across the street to check their mail or pull out of their driveways due to the constant speeding. Despite our efforts—posting multiple “Slow Down, Kids and Pets at Play” signs—the problem persists. Families walk these streets with their children, grandchildren, and pets. Cyclists from Redlands and Yucaipa rely on these roads daily.
We are calling on the city to take immediate steps to make our neighborhood safer. The goal of this petition is to have:
- Speed bumps installed across 17th Street to slow down traffic.
- Stop signs placed for both eastbound and southbound traffic at the intersection of Outer Hwy 10 and 17th Street. Also a stop sign placed at the intersection of Florida Street & 17th Street.
- Speed limit signs and residential area signs installed to remind drivers they are in a neighborhood, not a freeway.
- More streetlights added for better visibility at night, improving safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.
These measures will help prevent reckless driving, protect our families, and restore safety to our neighborhood.
This is our home. These are our families, our friends, our pets, and we all deserve to feel safe. We need action now—before tragedy strikes.
